I’ve chosen to go into the details of the ten teams expected to win in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

#1 Morocco (The Atlas Lions)

First on the list is Morocco, the top-performing team in African soccer right now. They’re ranked 11th in the world and are fresh from a great FIFA World Cup campaign held in Qatar. Morocco’s team, full of talented players, reached the semi-finals of the World Cup but unfortunately lost to France 2-0.

In the AFCON championship, Morocco finds itself in Group F alongside DR Congo, Zambia, and Tanzania. With what the squad brings to the table, the drawn Morocco group is an easy one for the likes of Achraf Hakimi, Hakim Ziyech, and company.

#2 Senegal (Lions of Teranga)

At number two, it’s the 18th-ranked FIFA team—Senegal. While the recent FIFA World Cup didn’t go as expected for Kalidou Koulibaly’s team, they are determined to clinch their second AFCON title this year.

Talking about their draws in the African Cup of Nations 2024, Senegal sits in the Guinea group alongside Cameroon and Gambia. They have qualified as the Group L winners of the qualifying rounds.

Sadio Mané and co will kick start their campaign on 15th January against Gambia at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium, Yamoussoukro.

#3 Tunisia (Eagles of Carthage)

Tunisia grabs the number three spot in my list of the top 10 teams that will play in AFCON 2024. Ranked 28 in the FIFA world listing, this is one of those African teams that have made significant progress in recent years. 

Qualified as the winners of Group J, Tunisia finds its spot in the Group E of the final draw. The Eagles of Carthage are paired with Mali, Namibia, and South Africa, and the first match is scheduled to take place on the 16th of January.

#4 Algeria (The Desert Warriors)

Algeria’s National Football team, a.k .a. The Desert Warriors are lined up next. The two-time AFCON champions (1990, 2019) are eyeing another historic year with a squad that seems promising both on paper and on the field. 

The Group F winners of the qualifying rounds find themselves in Group D of the main draw alongside Angola, Burkina Faso, and Mauritania. With the opening match scheduled for 15 January 2024, Riyad Mahrez’s Algeria will look for a grand start against Angola. 

#5 Egypt (The Pharaohs)

At number five, I’ve for you the most successful team in the history of the AFCON Championship—Egypt. Nicknamed the Pharaohs, the Egypt National Team currently has 7 cup titles in its name. The list of achievements goes further with victories in many major tournaments, including the FIFA Arab Cup, Arab Games, African Games, and more.

As far as AFCON 2024 is concerned, Egypt is drawn in the Cape Verde group that also features Ghana and Mozambique. Watch out for the opening fixture on 14 January 2024 against Mozambique and witness Mohamed Salah play magic.

#6 Nigeria (Super Eagles)

Nigeria National Football Team (Super Eagles) has been a driving force in African soccer. From producing world-class players to winning tournaments across the continent, the team has seen the apex multiple times. It involves the highest FIFA ranking of 5 (achieved in April 1994)

Having failed to qualify for the recent edition of the FIFA World Cup, the Nigerian team aims for a comeback with the 4th AFCON title. Drawn in Group A with Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau, the Super Eagles will kick start their campaign on 14th January.

#7 Cameroon (The Indomitable Lions)

5-time AFCON champions Cameroon goes in the 34th edition as one of the most favorite teams to win. Thanks to a star-studded squad that features Darlin Yongwa, Frank Magri, Vincent Aboubakar, and more, Rigobert Song’s team has been exceptional in recent times. It includes the dominating qualifying campaign for the AFCON finals, where they emerged as the winners of Group C.

In the main draw, Cameroon are in Group C again. The Indomitable Lions will play against Guinea, Gambia, and Senegal on the 15th, 19th, and 23rd of January, respectively. 

#8 Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire/The Elephants) 

The host for the 2024 AFCON champions, Ivory Coast, is also in line to grab its third AFCON title. Although being the hosts, the team enjoyed direct qualification; you can never doubt the team’s capability on the field. If you consider the 2024 fixtures, for instance, Côte d’Ivoire has lost only two points out of the 11 matches played. That’s impressive!

In Group A with Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast boasts a strong squad. With the added advantage of local support, it won’t be surprising to see Ivory Coast lifting the title.

#9 Burkina Faso (Les Étalons)

Burkina Faso ranks among the top-tier African teams that are yet to win the AFCON Championship. Having displayed brilliant performances in the qualifiers, hopes are high that Bertrand Traoré and his team will write history this year. 

But for that, Les Étalons has to get the better of Algeria, Mauritania, and Angola in group stages. Burkina Faso’s national football team will play its first match against Mauritania on 16th January. This will be followed by the most headed clash with Algeria on 20th January. 

The final fixture of the group stage for Burkina Faso is scheduled for 23rd January 2024.

#10 Tanzania (Taifa Stars)
